Melnik

Melnik is about 2 hours by car from Izvor, but well woth it. The drive south towards the Greek border is magnificent as you pass through the mountains and along the river. You will pass by Blagoevgrad and Sandanski before arriving at Melnik, the smallest town on Bulgaria.

It survives on the tourist market, with some trinket shops, but the local Mehanas (small, local restaurants), offer some superb local food. Melnik is also renowned for its red wine.
